Ten years ago, I stood in line at my local theater for roughly two hours with my wife, brother, and several of his friends. Anticipation was high. The Dark Knight , released in , was still very fresh in the realm of pop culture in a time before the onslaught of Marvel films that currently dominate the cineplex. How would Nolan top that?

Had Batman reached his apex? Was a third film foolhardy at best? In the interim between Batman films, Nolan delivered Inception , perhaps the best and most ambitious blockbuster to hit screens in the last 15 years. That mind-bending, action-packed extravaganza only heightened our anticipation for Rises , which would undoubtedly change cinema in the same way its predecessor and Inception had a few years earlier. On first viewing, Rises was awesome. A spectacular tour de force of entertainment, stunts, spectacle, character, and violence.

I was riveted by its muscular action and strong emphasis on the Bruce Wayne character. Bane was ferocious. Everyone in the theater gasped. My brother and I cheered. It was awesome. The performances were great. Christian Bale will likely always be my Batman of choice. The film was appropriately long but never boring, and just so happens to feature some of my all-time favorite Batman scenes. The stock exchange scene featuring Hangman , for example, is the best sequence out of the entire Dark Knight trilogy when it comes to tension and excitement.

The sight of Batman on the Batpod being chased by a thousand cop cars never gets old. It takes over an hour to get to this sequence, but the buildup makes the payoff even better. I love how Batman and Bane essentially dance around each other before going toe-to-toe a few scenes later. Nolan is painting on a massive canvas and telling a sprawling story. Such is the nature of blockbuster filmmaking. So long as the payoff delivers, then such details are easy to gloss over as was the case with The Dark Knight , which also required viewers to suspend disbelief at times. The opening action sequence that introduces Bane is relatively dumb when you really stop and think about it, but so awesome in execution that I just go with the flow:.

Again, we could discuss the nuances of these moments — how did Bane sneak explosives onto every bridge in Gotham? Why is there only one man in the entire world who can defuse this nuclear bomb? Why did Bane set the timer for three months? Hence, the brilliant cracked ice motif and the Tale of Two Cities references. I love it. That said, there are two things that drop Rises down a notch for me. Bruce was done with the Batman gig and already battered to a pulp as a result of his superhero exploits. In my mind, I figured he would return as Batman, albeit in a manner similar to his position in the comics where he operated mostly in secret alongside Gordon.

Instead, we learn in Rises that Bruce hopped on his Batpod and … retired. So, why did he rebuild the Batcave? After that traumatic event, he went into seclusion and struggled to reenter society. Except, once again, Bruce sets aside his own personal battle to lock horns with an enemy, likely in the hopes the battle will bring upon a swift and heroic death. As stated above, when Bruce climbs out of the pit he has found peace; and finally comes to terms with his inner demons.

Honestly, all I needed was a throwaway line from Alfred explaining how Bruce had completely lost himself in the Batman persona over the last seven or so years. He could still be a Howard Hughes type who rarely leaves his house unless hidden under the cape and cowl. Oh, the possibilities. The other issue I have is in the third act. The shift in editing over to pages for the movies, characters, actors, directors, composers, crew and galleries is now fully in effect. More details are available in the progress report. Christopher Nolan was hesitant about returning to the series for a second time, but agreed after developing a story with his brother and Goyer that he felt would conclude the series on a satisfactory note. Nolan used IMAX cameras for much of the filming, including the first six minutes of the film, to optimize the quality of the picture. A variation of the Batplane termed the "Bat", an underground prison set, and a new Batcave set were created specifically for the film.

As with The Dark Knight , viral marketing campaigns began early during production. When filming concluded, Warner Bros. Upon release, it received critical acclaim and is widely considered by publications to be one of the best films of It is currently the eleventh-highest-grossing film of all time, the third-highest-grossing film of , and the third-highest-grossing superhero film of all time. Feeling guilty for covering up Dent's crimes, Police Commissioner James Gordon writes a resignation speech confessing the truth, but decides not to use it.

Batman has disappeared; Bruce Wayne has become a recluse. Cat burglar Selina Kyle obtains Bruce's fingerprints from his home, kidnaps a congressman, then disappears. Kyle hands Bruce's fingerprints to Phillip Stryver, an assistant to Bruce's business rival John Daggett, in hope of having her criminal record erased. Stryver double-crosses Kyle, but she uses the congressman's stolen phone to alert the police to their location.

Gordon and the police arrive to find the congressman, then pursue Stryver's men into the sewers while Kyle flees. A masked man called Bane captures Gordon. Gordon escapes and is found by John Blake, a once-orphaned patrol officer who has deduced Batman's true identity from their similar backgrounds. Gordon promotes Blake to detective, with Blake reporting directly to him. Wayne Enterprises is unprofitable after Bruce discontinued his fusion reactor project when he learned that the core could be weaponized. Alfred Pennyworth, concerned that Bruce has not moved on from being Batman, reveals to him that Rachel Dawes had intended to marry Dent before she died, and resigns in an attempt to dissuade him.

Fearing that Daggett, Bane's employer, would gain access to the reactor, Bruce asks Wayne Enterprises board member Miranda Tate to take over his company. Bane later kills Daggett. After being promised the software to erase her criminal record, Kyle agrees to take Batman to Bane, but instead leads him into a trap. Bane appears and reveals that he intends to fulfill Ra's al Ghul's mission to destroy Gotham with the League of Shadows remnant.

He delivers a crippling blow to Batman's back, then takes him to a foreign, well-like prison where escape is virtually impossible. The inmates tell Bruce the story of Ra's al Ghul's child, born in the prison and cared for by a fellow prisoner before escaping, the only prisoner to have ever done so; Bruce assumes the child to be Bane. Meanwhile, Bane lures Gotham police underground and collapses the exits.
